7:00 AM - 8:00 AM

Continental Breakfast and Registration

8:00 AM - 8:15 AM

Welcome and Conference Overview
Speaker(s): Jill Larson, Senior Buyer, Puget Sound Energy

8:15 AM - 9:30 AM

State of the Industry
Speaker(s): Andrew Stewart, President, EDM International

Join us for a dynamic and interesting overview of the utility industry. Andy will draw on his tremendous depth of knowledge to provide a high level review of industry trends and developments while connecting this information back to utility structures.

9:30 AM - 10:45 AM

Regional Aging Experience
Speaker(s): Norman Sedillo, Standards Technician, Public Service Co-New Mexico
George Jones, Manager, Transportation and Utility Assets, Portland General Electric

PGE started a routine cycle of testing and treating wood poles in 1979. Now in the fourth cycle, full length climbing inspections have been added for older transmission poles. This presentation will cover the history of PGE's groundline treatment and reject rates, research on high decay in distribution and transmission poles, evidence that led PGE to the decision to full length inspection of older transmission poles, and the results they are finding in their system in Western Oregon.

Break from 10:00 - 10:15

For many of you, double-digit rainfall and humidity is the norm. In the Southwest wood Poles are exposed to single-digit rainfall and humidity. The second half of this presentation will focus on maintenance and specification adjustments we make to deal with a hot and arid environment.

10:45 AM - 12:00 PM

Material Options - Alternative to Solid Wood
Speaker(s): Kurt Blackbern, Plant Engineer, Valmont-Newmark
Robert Reisdorff, President, Laminated Wood Systems, Inc.
Galen Fecht, Director, Commercial, RS Technologies
Bob Guilliams, Technical Sales Manager, Powertrusion Products

While the focus of the 2009 Utility Pole Conference centers on solid wood poles, utilities are constructed of a combination of different types of material. Introductions of five alternative product suppliers will provide an overview of each alternate pole material. Following the introductions, more information may be obtained on the alternate products at the Tradeshow following this session.

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Trade Show and Lunch

1:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Avian / Wildlife
Speaker(s): Richard Harness, Certified Wildlife Biologist, EDM International

Learn the laws protecting migratory birds and common problems experienced by electric utilities. Problems discussed will include nesting, woodpecker damage, and electrical contacts/outages. Common solutions will be covered along with common misapplications.

2:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Inspection Overview
Speaker(s): Rob Nelson, Project Director, EDM International

Inspection is required under the NESC, but it is often overlooked and frequently the first item eliminated in tough times. This session will provide an overview of current inspection processes and identify some emerging new trends to improve the process.

2:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Defending Inspection Program
Speaker(s): Robert Butera, Vice President, Marketing, Osmose Utilities Services, Inc.

Bob Butera will address the challenges of obtaining and maintaining funding for adequate pole maintenance programs in times of unprecedented competition for O&M and capital dollars. The presentation will identify tactics for preparing a persuasive business case for investments in preventative maintenance.

3:15 PM - 4:00 PM

Demo- Maintaining Pole
Speaker(s): Robert Butera, Vice President, Marketing, Osmose Utilities Services, Inc.
Andy Kudick, Operations Manager, EDM International
Randy Gross, Products Manager, Copper Care Wood Preservatives, Inc.

This hands-on demonstration will display available products and applications for in-service pole remediation.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Trade Show and Vendor's Reception
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

7:30 AM - 8:00 AM

Continental Breakfast

8:00 AM - 8:30 AM

Carbon Footprint / Disposal
Speaker(s): Maureen Puettman PhD, LCA Consultant, Environmental Product Analysis, WoodLife

Recent studies have presented data indicating the best way to store carbon and reduce carbon emissions is to store the carbon in forest, or do not harvest. While research conducted by CORRIM shows that carbon reduction strategies must consider not only what is captured in trees, but also consider the carbon stored in wood products from cradle-to-grave to understand the true carbon footprint. Every input and output for every stage of wood use, from forest regeneration to wood processing, product use and ultimate disposal has been extensively evaluated. This presentation will compare the carbon footprint of wood treated utility poles to that of steel and concrete.

8:30 AM - 9:30 AM

Product Decision Process
Speaker(s): Robert A. Ochs, Civil Engineer, Transmission Projects Engineering, Bonneville Power Administration
Dave Wilcox, Senior Engineer, Electrical System Engineering, Puget Sound Energy

This two-part session will start with a case study of Bonneville Power Administration's Montana project and the factors affecting the selection of materials.

The second case study will cover wind farm challenges, freeway crossing situations and others where customer constraints and easement restrictions caused engineers to be creative with product selection.

9:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Joint Use: Hot Topics and Current Issues
Speaker(s): David Marne, President and Senior Electrical Engineer, Marne and Associates, Inc.

Do you ever wonder why people call them "Telephone Poles" not "Power Poles?" This session will discuss who is qualified to work on a joint use pole, three questions to ask joint use utility workers, the #1 and easiest solution to solving joint use clearance problems, and a brief discussion of how NESC Clearances relate to OSHA Standards.

10:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Break & Hotel Check Out

10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

Corrosion
Speaker(s): William Santucci, Senior Principal Engineer, Salt River Project

Corrosion at the base of a steel streetlight pole structurally weakens the steel pole and lack of a protective coating causes corrosion. Come hear unique solutions to utilizing a carbon fiber sock filled with epoxy just above (hand hole cover) and below the groundline surface verses pole replacement.

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Oil Issues
Speaker(s): Jeffrey Morrell, Professor, Department of Forest Products, Oregon State University

This session will outline the basics of solvent selection for treatments of utility poles with special reference to recent changes in solvent characteristics and their possible effects on properties.

11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Trade Show and Lunch

1:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Taking Advantage of an Economic Downturn
Speaker(s): Shannon J. Rauch, Vice President, BIS Consulting, LLC

There is less new construction for many utilities as the economy has gone into recession. However, there are opportunities to carry out work on priorities that have had to wait because of the need to meet consumer's demand for service over the past several years. Taking advantage of an economic downturn requires careful planning to help identify resources, but with the pressure off to meet what has been significant customer demands for new service, other priorities can be focused on.

1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Asset Management Workshop
Speaker(s): Rick Vail, Director, Asset Management, PacifiCorp

Have an issue that is weighing on your mind? New this year is the opportunity to site with your counterparts in a round table discussion on pointed subjects. A moderator will help stir conversation and keep the exchange on point. Share your issues to get feedback from your peers. This is the ultimate opportunity for you to strive for ideas to help you.
